Our Core Values Program runs alongside the Reboot Program and focuses on explicitly teaching and promoting our four key values: Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, and Kindness. Each term, we highlight one of these values as a focus for the whole school.
As part of the program, teachers introduce and explore the targeted value during morning circle time through activities such as discussions, role plays, shared stories, and more. This allows students to develop a clear understanding of what each value looks like in action.
Each day, classroom teachers and specialist teachers choose a student who has demonstrated the current core value and email home to share which value was shown and how. In addition, teachers and teacher aides on playground duty also select students who demonstrate the focus value. These students receive a slip, and their classroom teacher will follow up with an email home.
When a student receives three emails acknowledging their demonstration of a core value (with at least one recognition coming from a lunchtime or specialist setting), they will be awarded a wristband for that value. Students are encouraged to wear these wristbands to school. Once all four core value wristbands have been earned, the student becomes eligible to receive the Core Values Pin.
In addition, teachers can issue the core value boomie when the student is demonstrating the targeted core value in class. These boomies go into the Core Values Boomie draw for the whole school parade. Students whose names are drawn win an iceblock. These boomies are then combined with regular boomies to contribute to their overall boomie numbers for end of term activities.
The targeted value is taught daily for the first two weeks of each term, with ongoing reinforcement and incidental teaching throughout the rest of the term. While there is a specific value focus each term, students can continue to be recognised for demonstrating any of the four values and work toward earning wristbands in each area.
